Spain requires a plain white background for all passport photographs submitted to the Policía Nacional. The background must be pure white with no patterns, gradients, textures, or shadows.
Exact Background Rules for Spanish Passport Photos
The background must be:
- White (#FFFFFF) — pure white, not off-white, cream, ivory, or grey
- Uniform — the same shade from edge to edge
- Smooth — no visible texture, grain, or pattern
- Shadow-free — no shadows from your head, body, or hair

Spain uses a 26×32mm photo size — significantly smaller than the 35×45mm standard used by most European countries. This is one of the smallest passport photo sizes in the world. Despite the small size, the white background must be uniform throughout the frame. Glasses and smiling are not permitted.

Spanish Passport Photo Background vs Other EU Countries
EU member states each set their own passport photo background within EU guidelines. They do not all use the same colour.
| Country | Background | EU/Schengen | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spain | White | Yes | White required, 26×32mm |
| France | White | Yes | Same background, different size (35×45mm) |
| Italy | White | Yes | Same background, different size (35×45mm) |
| Netherlands | White | Yes | Same background, different size (35×45mm) |
| Poland | White | Yes | Same background, different size (35×45mm) |
| Germany | Light grey | Yes | Different — will fail in Spain |
| United Kingdom | Light grey | No (post-Brexit) | Different — will fail in Spain |
Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Poland all require white. Germany and the UK require light grey. A white-background photo taken for France or Italy will have the correct background for Spain — but the dimensions will almost certainly be wrong because Spain uses 26×32mm.
What Background Colors Fail for Spanish Passport Photos?
Off-white and cream. Walls that appear white to the eye often photograph as cream or pale yellow under warm indoor lighting.
Light grey. Using a German or UK passport photo (light grey at 230,230,230) for a Spanish passport is rejected.
Shadows. Standing too close to the wall casts a body shadow. The most common DIY failure.
Gradients. A single overhead light makes the background brighter at the top and darker at the bottom.
Textured surfaces. Walls with visible texture or wallpaper patterns fail.
Where to Get Spanish Passport Photos with White Background
Comisaría de Policía (police station) photo booths. Photo booths at police stations where passports are issued. Cost: ~€10. These include both prints and a digital file. The booths are calibrated for Policía Nacional specifications — the most reliable option.
Professional photographers (fotógrafos). Studios across Spain offer passport photo services. Cost: €12–25. Ask for "fotos para pasaporte español" to ensure they use the correct 26×32mm dimensions and white background.
El Corte Inglés. Department store photo services in major cities. Cost: €8–15.
Carrefour and other supermarkets. Photo kiosks in larger stores. Cost: €8–12.

Spaniards abroad. Spanish consulates accept locally-taken photos that meet Policía Nacional requirements. The unusual 26×32mm size is the main challenge — most foreign photo studios default to 35×45mm. Specify "foto para pasaporte español, 26 por 32 milímetros, fondo blanco" (Spanish passport photo, 26×32mm, white background). In countries with large Spanish communities (UK, France, Germany, Argentina, Ecuador), consulate-area photo services may already understand the requirements.
Schengen Visa Background Rules at Spanish Consulates
If you are applying for a Schengen visa through a Spanish consulate (not a Spanish passport), the photo requirements follow Spanish standards — white background. The same Schengen visa applied for at a German consulate would require light grey. The issuing country's rules apply.
How to Create a White Background for Spanish Passport Photos
The White Wall Method for Spanish Passport Photos
- Find a smooth white wall. Interior walls painted flat white work best. Test by placing a sheet of printer paper against the wall.
- Stand 40–60cm from the wall. This gap eliminates your body shadow.
- Use two light sources at 45 degrees. Cross-lighting cancels shadows.
- Use daylight bulbs (5000K+). Standard warm bulbs cast yellow tones.
- Check the result on a computer screen. Zoom into the background — it should be uniformly white.
The Poster Board Method for Spanish Passport Photos
White foam core board (cartón pluma blanco) from a papelería (stationery shop) provides a reliable, inexpensive backdrop.
Natural Light Method for Spanish Passport Backgrounds
Spain's Mediterranean climate provides excellent natural light. Position yourself near a large window on a slightly overcast day. Morning and late afternoon light is softer than midday sun. Avoid direct sunlight, which creates harsh shadows and excessive contrast.
The Shadow Problem in Spanish Passport Photo Backgrounds
Shadows are the most common background issue in DIY photos.
The fix: distance. Stand 40–60cm from the wall. The gap gives the shadow space to fall below the frame.
Phone flash creates the worst shadows. The built-in flash casts a sharp shadow directly behind your head. Disable it and use room lighting or natural light.
Two lights eliminate most shadows. Position lamps at 45 degrees on each side. If a faint shadow remains, add a third light aimed at the background.
Overhead ceiling lights create shadow bands between your body and the wall. Switch to side-positioned lights for better results.
Headwear Rules for Spanish Passport Photo Backgrounds
Religious headwear. Spanish passport photos permit religious head coverings. The face must be fully visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead. The headwear must not cast shadows onto the white background.
Non-religious headwear. Hats, caps, and decorative headwear are not permitted.
Spanish Passport Photo Background Rules for Babies
Infants and young children must meet the same white background requirement.
Newborns and infants. Lay the baby on a plain white sheet and photograph from directly above. Ensure even lighting and no wrinkles.
Toddlers. Seat the child against a white background. An assistant can hold the child's attention above the camera.
Children's passports in Spain require renewal every 2 years for children under 5, and every 5 years for children aged 5–30. A new photo is needed at each renewal.
Common Spanish Passport Photo Background Mistakes
Using a German/UK photo. Light grey backgrounds from Germany or the UK will be rejected.
Wrong size. Spain's 26×32mm is much smaller than the 35×45mm European standard. A standard European passport photo will not work for Spain even if the background is white.
Yellow lighting. Warm bulbs make white walls photograph as cream. Switch to daylight bulbs.
Heavy digital editing. Minor brightness adjustments are fine. Aggressive background replacement raises authenticity concerns.
Overexposing the background. Extreme brightness creates a glow around your head. White, not blindingly bright.
Using fabric backdrops with visible texture. Fabric wrinkles create shadows and visible weave. Use paper, foam board, or a smooth wall instead.
