How to Prepare for Your NIMC NIN Enrolment Session
You can't control the camera, the lighting, or the backdrop. But you can control how you show up.
Wear something with contrast. A white or very pale top blends into the white backdrop. Dark or mid-toned solid colours work best — navy, grey, green, burgundy. The face needs to be the focus of the image.
No glasses. NIMC does not permit eyewear in enrolment photos, consistent with the wider Nigerian identity document standard. Remove glasses before the photo is taken.
No hats or caps. Head coverings worn for religious reasons are permitted, but the face must be fully visible from hairline to chin. Non-religious headwear is not allowed.

NIN Slip vs Smart National ID Card: What's the Difference?
These are two different outputs of the same enrolment:
NIN Slip — a printed paper document bearing your NIN, your photograph, and your personal details. Issued immediately at the enrolment centre. The NIN Slip is widely accepted for identity verification, SIM card registration, bank account linking, and accessing government services.
Smart National ID Card — the physical plastic card, similar in size to a credit card, with a chip. This card embeds your NIN and biometric data. NIMC is issuing these progressively as the system scales. Processing takes 2–4 weeks from enrolment. Collection is at the centre or via an approved delivery arrangement.
For most day-to-day purposes in Nigeria, the NIN number itself — shared verbally or via text — is what organisations ask for. The slip is the paper record; the card is the durable credential.

Queue times. Enrolment centres in Lagos, Abuja, and other major cities can have significant queues. Arrive early — ideally when the centre opens — to reduce your wait. Some centres operate on a first-come-first-served basis; others use a ticketing system.
Photography conditions. The on-site camera is typically a standard digital camera mounted on a tripod or stand. The backdrop is a white or off-white screen. Lighting varies by centre — some have proper studio lighting, others use natural light supplemented by a basic flash.
