Mexico requires a plain white background for all passport photographs submitted to the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE). The background must be pure white with no patterns, gradients, textures, or shadows.
Exact Background Rules for Mexican Passport Photos
The background must be:
- White (#FFFFFF) — pure white, not off-white, cream, ivory, or grey
- Uniform — the same shade from edge to edge
- Smooth — no visible texture, grain, or pattern
- Shadow-free — no shadows from your head, body, or hair

Mexico uses the standard 35×45mm photo size. Glasses and smiling are not permitted.

What Background Colors Fail for Mexican Passport Photos?
Off-white and cream. Walls that appear white to the eye often have warm undertones. Cream, eggshell, and marfil (ivory) all fail.
Shadows. Standing too close to the wall casts a body shadow. The most common DIY failure.
Gradients. A single overhead light makes the background brighter at the top and darker at the bottom.
Yellow cast. Warm indoor lighting (especially incandescent bulbs common in Mexican homes) turns white walls cream.
Textured surfaces. Walls with visible texture or wallpaper patterns fail.
Light grey. What passes in Germany or the UK (light grey at 230,230,230) fails in Mexico.
Mexican Passport Photo Background vs Other Countries
| Country | Background | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mexico | White | Plain white required |
| United States | White | Same background (different size: 51×51mm square) |
| Canada | White | Same background (different size: 50×70mm) |
| France | White | Same as Mexico |
| Japan | White | Same as Mexico |
| Australia | White | Same as Mexico |
| Germany | Light grey | Different — will fail in Mexico |
| United Kingdom | Light grey | Different — will fail in Mexico |
Mexico shares its white background with most countries, including the US and Canada. A white-background photo taken for the US will have the correct background colour for Mexico — though the US uses a square 51×51mm format and Mexico uses 35×45mm rectangular, so the dimensions will differ.
Where to Get Mexican Passport Photos with White Background
Oficinas de la SRE. SRE offices in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, Tijuana, and other cities handle passport applications. Most have photo services on-site or immediately nearby. These are the most reliable option.
Professional photo studios (estudios fotográficos). Studios across Mexico produce compliant passport photos. Cost: MX$50–200. Ask for "foto para pasaporte mexicano, fondo blanco" (Mexican passport photo, white background).
Farmacias Guadalajara, Farmacias del Ahorro. Major pharmacy chains offer passport photo services at many locations. Cost: MX$40–100. Convenient and generally reliable.
Walmart, Costco, Sam's Club. Select locations offer passport photo services. Cost: MX$40–80.

Mexicans abroad. Mexico has the largest diaspora in the Americas, with millions of citizens living in the United States. Mexican consulates (consulados) throughout the US — Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, New York, Dallas, San Antonio, Phoenix, and dozens more — accept locally-taken photos. The US white background is correct for Mexico, but the US square format (51×51mm) is wrong — specify "foto para pasaporte mexicano, 35 por 45 milímetros." In the US, Walgreens and CVS can print passport-format photos, but verify the correct Mexican dimensions are used. Mexican communities in Canada, Spain, and Germany can also use consulate services — in Germany, note that the light grey background used for German passports will not work for Mexico.
SRE Online Portal Background Requirements for Digital Upload
When applying through the SRE's Citas en Línea system, you may need to upload a digital passport photo. The system checks background colour, uniformity, and face positioning. Ensure your digital file is high quality and not overly compressed. A photo that looks fine in print may fail the digital check — JPEG compression artifacts can make a uniform white background appear blocky.
How to Create a White Background at Home for Mexican Photos
The White Wall Method for Mexican Passport Photos
- Find a smooth white wall. Interior walls painted flat white work best. Test by placing a sheet of printer paper against the wall.
- Stand 40–60cm from the wall. This gap eliminates your body shadow.
- Use two light sources at 45 degrees. Cross-lighting cancels shadows.
- Use daylight bulbs (5000K+). Standard warm or incandescent bulbs cast yellow tones.
- Check the result on a computer screen. Zoom into the background — it should be uniformly white.
The Poster Board Method for Mexican Passport Photos
White foam core board (cartón pluma blanco) from a papelería (stationery shop) provides a reliable, inexpensive backdrop. A3 or larger is sufficient.
Natural Light Method for Mexican Passport Photo Backgrounds
Mexico receives abundant natural light. Position yourself near a large window. Morning or late afternoon light is softer than midday sun. Avoid direct sunlight, which creates harsh shadows. In central and southern Mexico, altitude can intensify sunlight — overcast days are ideal.
The Shadow Problem in Mexican Passport Photo Backgrounds
Shadows are the most common background issue.
The fix: distance. Stand 40–60cm from the wall. The gap gives the shadow space to fall below the frame.
Phone flash creates the worst shadows. The built-in flash casts a sharp shadow directly behind your head. Disable it and use room lighting or natural light.
Two lights eliminate most shadows. Position lamps at 45 degrees on each side.
Headwear Rules for Mexican Passport Photo Backgrounds
Religious headwear. Mexican passport photos permit religious head coverings. The face must be fully visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead. The headwear must not cast shadows onto the white background.
Non-religious headwear. Sombreros, gorras (caps), and other hats are not permitted.
Mexican Passport Photo Background Rules for Babies and Children
Infants and young children must meet the same white background requirement.
Newborns and infants. Lay the baby on a plain white sheet and photograph from directly above. Ensure even lighting and no wrinkles.
Toddlers. Seat the child against a white background. An assistant can hold the child's attention above the camera.
Children's passports in Mexico require renewal every 3 years for those under 3, and every 6 years for those aged 3–17. A new photo is needed at each renewal.
Common Mexican Passport Photo Background Mistakes
Yellow lighting. Warm or incandescent bulbs make white walls photograph as cream. Switch to daylight bulbs or use natural window light.
Using a US-format photo. The US 51×51mm square format will not work for Mexico's 35×45mm rectangular format, even if the background is correct.
Using fabric backdrops with visible texture. Fabric wrinkles create shadows and visible weave. Use paper, foam board, or a smooth wall.
Heavy digital editing. Minor brightness adjustments are fine. Aggressive background replacement raises authenticity concerns.
Overexposing the background. Extreme brightness creates a glow around your head. The background should be white, not blindingly bright.
Objects in the background. Any visible furniture, decorations, or wall features behind you cause rejection. The entire visible area must be white.
Verifying Your Mexican Passport Photo Background
Before submitting, check:
- Background is white across the entire frame
- No visible shadows behind you
- No texture, pattern, or seam visible
- Background extends beyond all edges
- Lighting is even from top to bottom, left to right
