Irish driving licence photos must be 35×45mm with a white background and no glasses — the same as the Irish passport. The National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) applies the Irish biometric photo standard for all licence applications and renewals. No separate spec to learn; if your passport photo is compliant, your driving licence photo is too.
Irish Driving Licence Photo Specifications
| Requirement | Specification |
|---|---|
| Size | 35×45mm (413×531 pixels at 300 dpi) |
| Background | White |
| Head position | Centred, looking directly at camera |
| Expression | Neutral, mouth closed |
| Glasses | Not permitted |
| Head coverings | Only for religious or medical reasons |
| Photo age | Recent — within 6 months |

The NDLS enforces these specs at every application centre. A photo that doesn't meet the Irish passport standard will be refused at the desk before your application is accepted.

How the NDLS Works for Irish Driving Licence Applications
The National Driver Licence Service handles all driving licence applications in Ireland. There is no fully online renewal process that bypasses an in-person visit — you must appear at an NDLS centre for identity verification. Appointments are recommended; walk-ins are accepted at some centres but appointment holders are prioritised.

Find your nearest centre and book at ndls.ie.
Bring to your appointment
- A valid identity document: Irish passport, Public Services Card, or current driving licence
- One compliant 35×45mm photo (or confirm in advance if your centre offers in-centre digital capture)
- Proof of address: utility bill or bank statement dated within the past 6 months
- Completed application form D401 (available at ndls.ie or collected at the centre on the day)
- Medical declaration form D501, if applicable to your licence category or age
- €55 application fee, payable by card or cash at the centre
Some NDLS centres have in-house biometric cameras and can capture your photo digitally during the appointment. This isn't available at all locations. Call ahead if you'd prefer to skip bringing a physical print.
Irish Driving Licence Fees and Validity Periods
| Application Type | Fee |
|---|---|
| First licence | €55 |
| Renewal | €55 |
| Foreign licence exchange | €55 |
The €55 fee applies uniformly. There's no discount for online pre-registration and no express processing tier.
Licence validity
| Holder | Validity |
|---|---|
| Standard (under 70) | 10 years |
| Over 70 | 3 years (with medical certificate) |
Standard processing takes 5–10 working days. The licence is posted to your registered address. You'll receive an acknowledgement slip at the NDLS centre on the day, which serves as proof of application and temporary documentation.
The Public Services Card Shortcut
If you hold a valid Public Services Card (PSC), the NDLS can use your existing photo on record for the driving licence — in some cases without requiring a new physical photo submission. This is worth confirming when you book your appointment. The PSC uses the Irish passport standard, so if your card is current, the photo on file should be compliant.
Where to Get a Compliant Irish Driving Licence Photo
An Post photo machines. Post offices throughout Ireland have booths calibrated to the Irish passport standard. Output is 35×45mm on a white background. Cost is typically €5–7. These are generally the most convenient option.
Photography studios. Ask for passport photos. The Irish standard is the default. Professional studios verify the background and framing before printing. Cost is €8–15 for a set of four to six prints.
In-centre capture. If your NDLS centre offers digital photo capture, you won't need to bring prints at all. The biometric system handles sizing and background. Availability is worth confirming before your appointment.
Common Irish Driving Licence Photo Mistakes
Wrong background. The Irish standard requires a white background. Cream, off-white, light grey, or any other tint is not accepted. If the photo booth you used runs warm, the print will fail.
Bringing photos from another country. Spanish driving licence photos are 26×32mm — wrong size. French photos are the right size (35×45mm) with white background, but you should verify they meet the Irish standard. UK driving licence photos are 35×45mm but use a grey background — Ireland requires white, so UK photos may not comply. Get fresh Irish-standard photos to be safe.
Missing proof of address. The photo is rarely the application-stopper. Proof of address — a utility bill or bank statement dated within six months — is the most frequently forgotten document at NDLS appointments. Bring two if you want to be sure.
Wrong form. Form D401 is the licence application form. Form D501 is the medical declaration. Arriving with the wrong one wastes the appointment. Download both from ndls.ie before your visit.
Wearing glasses. Glasses are not permitted in Irish driving licence photos. Remove all eyewear — including clear prescription glasses — before the photo session. This is the same rule as for the passport and employment permit.
Expression and Appearance Rules for Irish Driving Licences
The NDLS applies the same biometric expression standard as the Irish passport:
- Mouth closed — no teeth visible, lips together gently
- Neutral expression — no smiling, no frowning
- Eyes open — both eyes fully visible, looking directly at the camera
- No glasses — all types banned, including clear prescription lenses
- Hair away from face — forehead and both eyes must be fully visible
- Head coverings — only for documented religious or medical reasons; face from chin to forehead must remain visible
No Glasses — All Irish Documents
Ireland does not allow glasses in any identity document photo. This applies to the driving licence, passport, employment permit, and visa. The rule covers all types of eyewear: prescription glasses, reading glasses, fashion frames, and sunglasses.
If you wear prescription glasses daily, remove them before the photo. Your driving licence photo will show you without glasses, even though you drive with them. This is standard practice and NDLS staff will not question it.
How Irish Photo Standards Compare
| Document | Size | Background | Glasses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driving Licence | 35×45mm | White | Not allowed |
| Irish Passport | 35×45mm | White | Not allowed |
| Employment Permit | 35×45mm | White | Not allowed |
| Visa | 35×45mm | White | Not allowed |
All Irish identity documents share one unified specification. One photo session covers all documents.
Exchanging a Foreign Licence for an Irish Driving Licence
If you've moved to Ireland from outside the EU/EEA and hold a driving licence from a recognised exchange country, you can exchange it for an Irish licence at an NDLS centre. The photo requirements are the same: 35×45mm, white background, no glasses, neutral expression.
Recognised exchange countries include the following: Australia, Canada (certain provinces), Japan, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, and others. Check ndls.ie for the current list.
EU/EEA licence holders can drive in Ireland on their existing licence. If you become a resident and want to exchange it for an Irish licence (useful as a secondary ID), the same photo spec applies.
